In the world of upper limb prostheses, few companies dominate the majority of the market. They propose different kinds of hand, wrist and elbow prostheses but their control is often difficult to understand by the patients. We have decided to develop new myoelectric prosthetic arm (elbow, wrist and hand) by axing our development on the use of new technologies and facility of use for the patient. In this paper, we are explaining in details the different kinds of prostheses currently proposed to the amputees, their advantages and their drawbacks, the descriptions of the patients' needs and the possible improvements of the product. We will develop the designing choices of our prosthesis and the movements it can realize. Then we will explain the simplified control of the product by the patient and its first reactions. Finally, we will conclude by the news ideas and the next researches to concretize.Comment: 6 page

My accreditation thesis to supervise research (HDR) is intended to summarize my professional teaching experience, administrative responsibilities as well as my scientific research. My research focuses on design methodologies on products in the field of disability and health in general. Theoretical concepts such as User Centered Design, Scenario Based Design (design based on simulation methods), along with Participatory design and Action research provide the information enabling me to conduct experiments and create new concepts. New product developments are introduced in conjunction with therapists and hospital practitioners. By working with disabled people, who are the end-users, my experiments provide vision for new methods of design to integrate specific characteristics for them. The following document shows the synergy existing between my professional activities and my involvement in civic associations. The importance of interdisciplinary health – technology around end-users and my permanent implications in real situations with the many stakeholders of the design process make up the core beliefs of my motivation as an actor in our society.

Integrating the human factors characterization of disabled users in a design method. Application to an interface for playing acoustic music

International audienceUsers and uses inclusion in product design remains a challenge, especially when their characterization is very specific, which is the case with disabled persons. Many design methodologies integrating user exist, for example, User-Centered Design (UCD). The application of these methodologies results in custom product designs, but they haven't objective the motor activities characterization of stakeholders: people with disabilities. Our ambition is to characterize and model the motor specificities of these future users during the design process to adapt the man-machine interfaces to these motor performances. In this paper, we propose an adaptation of the UCD design process by integrating theoretical models and technological tools of motion capture. In conclusion an in response to identified needs of AE2M project (Ergonomic Adaptation of the Musical Material), we present an application of our approach in this context

Designing for physically disabled users: benefits from human motion capture – a case study

International audiencePurpose: The present study aimed to improve the design of an interface that may help disabled children to play a musical instrument. The main point is to integrate human motion capture in the design process. Method: The participant performed 20 pointing movements toward four selected locations. A three one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed in order to determine the most efficient input location. For each button position, we compared (1) the reaction time (RT), (2) the movement time (MT), and (3) the spatial variability of the movements. Results: According to the results obtained for RT and MT, one position was the most efficient button location in order to produce efficient movements. Conclusions: As the case study showed, combining the 3D motion capture system and the statistical analysis led to help the designers their design methodology and crucial choices

A group of EMIRAcle partners have been working on "Virtual Prototyping (VP)" competencies. The long terms main objectives were: To set a common understanding concerning virtual prototyping To gather competencies in Virtual Prototyping including maturityregarding new concepts and software demonstrators To provide to academics or industries methods, models and software tosupport Virtual Prototyping The paper aims at presenting first results of that research group concerning the creation of a VP knowledge map (second objective). Those results are based on a design case study led by several partners of the EMIRAcle association

Automatized assessment of motor function in patients with NMD: MFM-Digital Study

International audienceGiven the progress of research and management in Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), validated tools are needed to assess patients’ motor function. The Motor Function Measure assessment (MFM) is known as principal outcome measure of the motor function with an international recognition. It is a validated tool and sensitive to the change applicable in SMA.Clinicians from the Neuromuscular Diseases Department (Hospices Civils de Lyon, France) are developing the MFM-digital, an automated system to assess SMA patients’ motor function based on MFM. By using a Microsoft Kinect and a digital tablet, the objective is to improve reliability and acceptability of the MFM by lowering the measure’s subjectivity linked to heteroevaluation and by creating a hybrid serious-game.The feasibility study assesses the relevance of the system to capture postures and motions during a MFM test. Due to technological limits of capture by the Kinect sensor, 14 on 32 items may be recognized by the Kinect and 3 items by a tablet. In each case, the therapist scores items in live by referring to the MFM manual. Based on digital data coming from Kinect and tablet records, the principal investigator informs a blind score. The good correlation between items scoring by a therapist and items scoring on captured digital data show the possibility to use an algorithm to propose an automatic score.21 records of MFM were collected with Kinect and Tablet sensors. The first results are encouraging, showing a good concordance between the scores with tracks of improvements of the system in particular concerning the capture for weaker patients. The data supplied by the MFM-digital system bring additional data, in particular the duration of the items’ exercises and kinematic parameters. One interest of this work consists in creating an automatic measurement tool, based on the MFM-items, which has already shown its validity
